Wheatley Fellowship – Apply Now!

2021 – 2022

Closing date for applications: Thursday 2 September, 2021

Birmingham School of Art and Eastside Projects are seeking applications from contemporary visual artists for the annual Wheatley Fine Art Fellowship.

The £9,000 tax-free stipend fellowship is intended to give a practitioner time and resources to develop new work and ideas alongside staff and students at Birmingham City University’s prestigious Birmingham School of Art.

The successful applicant will be provided with a space at the School and access to extensive facilities and expertise across the faculty. They will also work alongside Eastside Projects to make art public by developing their ideas for events, exhibitions or public projects – a further budget to seed fund activities is available.

You will be an artist who is interested in being attentive – listening, taking note, reflecting and responding and, like Eastside Projects, you will be interested in expanding the role of the artist in public life and supporting Birmingham and its citizens.

In the second semester, which runs between late January and May, you will work with a group of second year undergraduate students on a project negotiated between you and staff at the School. You will also give some tutorial support. Teaching will not exceed one day per week.

The Fellowship lasts for 10 months, commencing in November 2021

Previous Fellows include Harun Morrison , Sofia Niazi, Bridget O’Gorman
John Wood and Paul Harrison and Kathrin Böhm.

We particularly encourage applications from Black people, Asian people or people from a Global Majority background and/or Disabled or D/deaf people as these people are underrepresented in the School.
