The exhibition presented proposals and scale models by the five artists shortlisted by Birmingham Big Art Foundation and commissioned to imagine a major new work of public art for the city of Birmingham, to be completed in 2018.
The Birmingham Big Art Foundation is supported by Birmingham City Council and The Birmingham Civic Society, with Eastside Projects as Commissioning Agent.
Art is a vital part of our city’s past, present and future and our aim is to commission a new public artwork that can support and expand the idea of a twenty first century city.
The five artists have been invited to develop new myths and propose an artwork that will perform an iconic function within Birmingham. They have been encouraged to engage with the many layers of Birmingham, translating them into objects, scenarios or events that can produce new histories and possible futures.
We believe that Birmingham needs to invest in permanent public art and we are confident that Birmingham Big Art Project has five proposals that can animate our city in unexpected and memorable ways.
