From the Artists Mouth

Saturday, 2 March 2019
2 – 3pm

Join Freya Dooley and curator Gavin Wade for an informal walk through the newly opened exhibition Somewhere in the crowd there’s you. The exhibition centres around a multi channel sound installation of collected vocals, choral fragments and field recordings. Through this informal conversation Freya will introduce some of the essential themes is the work whilst introducing new ways to think about and listen to the work.

Freya is the recipient of the 2019 ESP Members Show, an annual opportunity for ESP members to apply for a solo-project or exhibition in our second gallery.

Freya Dooley is an artist based in Cardiff. She has been an ESP member since 2017. She works with words, moving image, sound and performance. Her work combines literary and pop culture references to create unstable narratives, soundtracks and auto/biographical semi-fictions.  Often referring or returning to anxious states, she works towards an articulation of the inside turned out. She is interested in the voice as something in between sound and language, thought and body. Freya also shares a collaborative practice with Cinzia Mutigli.

Forthcoming solo projects include a solo exhibition at Chapter Gallery, Cardiff in 2019, supported by the Arts Council of Wales. She also recently received a Jerwood Visual Arts Bursary to develop her work with the live and recorded voice. Other solo commissions include Speakable Things, Oriel Davies, Powys, 2018; and Rhythms and Disturbances, g39, Cardiff, 2016.
