Film Screening and Talking Circle

Join us at 6pm in the “terrain vague” for a relaxed and informal talking circle led by melissandre varin, exploring the ideas which swirl around dirty nails (les ongles noir) and reflecting on the experience of being part of this evolving project which has moved between Birmingham and Dakar Senegal.

Across the evening we will also be screening Like palm wine that emerges from the wounds of palm trees, a new film by Agnes Essonti Luque which documents les ongles noirs (dirty nails) a residency which took place at Ban Workshop in Dakar in May. This film was commissioned by Dwayne Church Simms for FABRIC’s Transform programme.


Agnes Essonti Luque (b.1996) is a Cameroonian-Spanish artist and curator whose practice is inspired by postcolonial and Black feminist thinkers as well as themes of ancestral connection, her own childhood memories, story-telling and nostalgia. Her body of work has encompassed numerous mediums, including lens-based media, textile, installation and performance. For the past few years, she’s been exploring the construction of Afro-diasporic identities, especially in the Spanish context. She’s interested in the multifaceted nature of identity and the process of layering, hybridation and pidginisation, seeing her own work as the possibility to re-imagine both history and her personal memories by dreaming about post-colonial futures.

Agnes Essonti’s work has been shown in different national and international exhibitions, including Foodscapes, the Spanish Pavilion at the 18th edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale (2023), “1384 Days Wide” at Bamako Encounters (2015), the 14th Dakar Biennale OFF and OZANGÉ I Biennale of African Photography in Spain (2022), the XI Biennale of Art of Lanzarote and Something Else in Cairo (2023). She presented her performances “Bayam Sellam” at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum and “La Bissaperie” at the MNCARS.
