Away Days: Bristol and Hauser & Wirth, Somerset
31 October 2014 to 1 November 2015
Away Days to Bristol and Hauser & Wirth, Somerset
Friday 31 October & Saturday 1 November
On Friday 31 October visited Hauser & Wirth’s new art centre in Bruton, Somerset, where we received a tour of site, including the galleries (which were showing Franz West when we visited) and gardens from Associate Director, Lucy MacDonald. Hauser & Wirth is a major commercial gallery with bases in New York, Zurich and London. Their new site at Durslade Farm, which opened in summer 2014, is home to a programme of residencies, exhibitions and education activity. Consisting of a group of Grade II listed farm buildings including a Farmhouse, Stables, Cow Sheds, Piggery, Threshing Barn the site was initially built as a ‘model farm’. The gardens form an important part of the 100 acre farm; Piet Oudolf, internationally-renowned landscape designer from the Netherlands, designed the landscaping scheme for the entire site.
From Bruton we travelled to Bristol where we caught up with old friends and met new people at a dinner with Spike Associates. On Saturday we visited a number of spaces in Bristol, including Arnolfini and Spike Island, to see exhibitions and meet some of the people running the programmes.
