Beloved (The Somerset House Conference)
16 August – 29 September 2018
Ort Gallery,500 – 504 Moseley Road, Balsall Heath, Birmingham, B12 9AH
Opening 16 August, 6pm
ESP member Dan Auluk has curated an exhibition of works by Nottingham based artist Kashif Nadim Chaudry at Ort Gallery. The exhibition draws inspiration from two places; the poetry of Rumi, the 13th century Sufi mystic and the 17th century painting ‘The Somerset House Conference’. Rumi refers to the beloved frequently within his poetry and there is a lot of debate as to whether this beloved is in fact his male lover Shams or else a term for the Divine or, perhaps, both.

The exhibition shows large conical forms reaching from floor to ceiling and creating a mountainous landscape. These sculptural pieces are inspired by the whirling dervish skirt presented on a monumental scale. The simple black fabric of each skirt is interrupted by a heavily embroidered and colourful panel. The exhibition touches on topics including Patriarchy, White Privilege, LGBT+ rights, gender, faith, tradition and culture.

Panel discussion, 15 September, 2pm
Closing event 28 September, 6pm
