Des Hughes is working with Eastside Projects throughout Production Show, working in collaboration with Craven Dunnill Jackfield Ltd in Ironbridge to develop new work using the encaustic tile making process.
Rather than producing a pattern or image by painting a glaze on the front edge of a tile, encaustic tile making uses different coloured clays that are inlaid into the body of the tile and revealed through rubbing back the surface. Taking aspects of this production process and themes in Des’ work, everyone who joined the workshop made a sculptural object using coloured plasters to take away.
