Exhibition continues 3 July – 4 September 2010

Nina Beier + Marie Lund, Ulises Carrión, Daniel Eatock, Martino Gamper, Nina Katchadourian, Moritz Kung + Richard Venlet, Kelly Large, John Latham, Fraser Muggeridge Studio, Rollo Press, Katerina Šedá + Radim Peško, Yann Sérandour, Simon Starling, Werkplaats Typografie, Keith Wilson

Curated by James Langdon and Gavin Wade

Above: Ulises Carrión, 'Self-portrait' 1979

‘Book Show’ is an exhibition of artworks, objects and structures that address the physical form of the book. The starting point for the exhibition is Ulises Carrión’s provocative series of aphorisms ‘The New Art of Making Books’ (1975). Carrión was the founder of Other Books and So in Amsterdam, a gallery and bookstore that during its short life (1975 to 1979) became the first major centre for the flourishing international artist-led publishing scene.

Carrión’s text establishes the specific conditions of the book as a display device:

A book is a sequence of spaces.
Each of these spaces is perceived at a different moment—a book is also a
sequence of moments.
A book is not a case of words, nor a bag of words, nor a bearer of words.
A writer, contrary to the popular opinion, does not write books.
A writer writes texts.

Carrión’s perspective on the form of the book de-emphasises any inherent union between the material form of the book and its printed contents, and implies that each body of material to be made into a book must somehow be addressed to the display conditions that the book offers.

BOOK
Launch: 6–9pm, Thursday 29 July 2010

Åbäke, Vito Acconci, Tauba Auerbach, Bedford Press, Ulises Carrión, Melissa Dubbin + Aaron S. Davidson, Daniel Eatock, Will Holder, Jeremy Jansen, Kelly Large, Fraser Muggeridge Studio, OK/RM, Simon Starling, Werkplaats Typografie

‘Book’, functions as a mobile extension to the exhibition. Including a facsimile reprint of Ulises Carrión’s ‘The New Art of Making Books’ as it originally appeared in the journal Kontexts; an illustrated text by James Langdon and additional works, both existing and newly commissioned.

Their combined weight, plus a shopping trolley filled with 33 kg, equalled the total weight of all the books requested. This weight was temporarily applied to the British Library piazza; which forms the roof of the high usage collection storage spaces underground. Magical World 2005
06:12 min/loop, DVD

Magical World presents a group of children from a free after-school music club based at a rundown 1980s cultural centre in Dubrava, a suburb of Zagreb, Croatia. The work introduces us to them rehearsing “Magical World” – a song chosen by Billing and written by the Afro-American singer Sidney Barnes in 1968 for Chicago vocal group The Rotary Connection. The lyrics – a melancholic description of transformation – resonate with the transformation the relatively young country is undergoing in adapting to the European Union demands while also establishing its own fragile national identity. Billing interweaves images of the children’s performance with various views of the suburban surroundings, echoing the rude utopian awakening of the song and the potential future transformation of their lives as they sing “Why do you wake me up / From such a beautiful dream / Can’t you see that I am sleeping / So why / don’t you leave me alone / … / I live in a magical world.”

Johanna Billing (b. 1973, Jönköping, Sweden) lives and works in Stockholm.
A Necessary Music 2008
29:09 min/loop, HDVD

A Necessary Music is a science fiction film about modernist social housing. A musically conceived piece, referencing the video operas of Robert Ashley, the film explores the social imaginary of a utopian landscape through directed attention to the voices that inhabit it. The film is set on Roosevelt Island, a small sliver of land situated between Manhattan and Queens, intersected by the Queensborough Bridge. Treating the medium of film as both a musical proposition and a proposal for collective production, A Necessary Music employs the residents of the Island as its authors and actors, gathering together texts written by them and using them to construct a script for the film. Accompanied by a fictional narration taken from Adolfo Bioy Casares’ 1941 science fiction novel ‘The Invention of Morel’, the film deploys fiction as a tool to frame and activate its site. Self-consciously dissolving from attempted realism to imagined narrative, what begins as a process concerned with sociality becomes instead an ethnographic fiction about place and community, and an investigation into representation itself.
